Construction and Its First Purpose
Construction began in mid-1614 under royal master builder Jerónimo Jorge, commissioned to defend Funchal against corsair attacks on the coast. Jorge did not live to see it finished. His son, Bartolomeu João, completed the work.
The fort's yellow ochre walls and corner watchtower, still the most photographed feature of the building, date from this original construction and have defined the profile of this stretch of the old town's seafront for more than four centuries.

It later served as British troop headquarters, then as Army Police quarters, then as a flood shelter after the destructive flood of 1803, one of the worst events in the city's recorded history.
