The 2006 Guinness Record

On 31 December 2006 a Funchal display of 66,326 fireworks fired from 37 sites set the Guinness World Record for the largest fireworks display, announced 1 January 2007. Madeira held the record until a Kuwait display surpassed it in 2012. Visit Madeira's own current page confirms the Guinness recognition but does not restate the exact 2006 firework count, so treat Funchal as a former record holder rather than a current one.

What a Recent Show Looks Like

More recent displays are launched from about 58 firing positions: 26 in the Funchal amphitheatre, 25 at Cais 8 and Praia Almirante Reis, 5 at sea and 2 on Porto Santo, lasting about 8 minutes. The show is watched from the amphitheatre, the seafront promenade and any hillside vantage point above the bay, since the display is spread along the whole waterfront rather than fired from one point. Spreading the positions this way is also why no single spot on the bay sees the entire display at once.

Where to Stand

No official source publishes a recommended viewing point or a road-closure map for 31 December. The amphitheatre itself, the Lido seafront and any hotel-zone balcony facing the bay all have a view of some part of the display, since the firing positions run the length of the harbour front. Arriving well before midnight is the practical advice here, since a display spread over 58 positions along the water draws crowds to every stretch of the promenade, not just the amphitheatre.

Visit Madeira's descriptive Atlantic Festival page says the International Fireworks Contest is three pyromusical shows on the first three Saturdays of June, each about 20 minutes, plus separate closing shows at Vila Baleira pier on Porto Santo and in Funchal. The DRT's own 2027 calendar PDF instead lists the contest on four dates, 5, 12, 19 and 26 June 2027, all Saturdays. Because the calendar PDF is the more granular, dated source, this page prints its four dates rather than the descriptive page's three.

What This Means for a Visit

If you are timing a trip to a Funchal-bay fireworks night, plan around any of the four Saturdays in June rather than assuming the festival stops after three. The Atlantic Festival itself runs longer than the fireworks contest, 4-27 June 2027 on the calendar, with concerts and other programming filling the weeks between the Saturday shows.

Flower Festival

The Flower Festival lasts about four weeks with most events at weekends, and Visit Madeira states most events are free to attend, with paid tickets needed only for seated places at the Grand Allegorical Flower Parade. The Wall of Hope sees children place a flower on a wall as an appeal for peace on the Saturday morning of the festival. A Flower and Regional Products Market runs during the festival alongside the parade programme.

Carnival

Madeira's Carnival runs about two weeks and moves between municipalities on different nights. The two Funchal set-pieces are the Cortejo Alegórico, the allegorical parade, and the satirical Cortejo Trapalhão, both held on Carnival Tuesday. The Festa dos Compadres in Santana, a tradition of more than 50 years, opens the wider Carnival season before the Funchal parades, though its own date is not published by year.
