The 17:00 last-entry rule holds in every season, even the long summer evenings when the garden itself stays open until 19:00. The operator sets it that way because the visit combines a steep 70,000 m² garden with a three-floor museum, and giving latecomers only two hours would rush both into one. Arrive after 17:00 and the gate will not open for you, whatever the season's closing time happens to say that day.

Two hours before last entry, so around 15:00, is the comfortable target if you want the full 1.5 to 2.5 hours the operator itself recommends for the garden and museum together. Cut it closer than that and you are choosing between the museum and a slow walk through the tile panels, not doing both, since the terrain is too steep to rush.

Three Realistic Routings

These are our estimates built on the operator's own 1.5 to 2.5 hour recommendation. Slopes are steep, so realistic pace matters more than area.

The Trolley Bus

The guided trolley-bus trip between the central lake and the Caminho das Babosas 4 entrance costs $5.73 (€5) per adult per trip. It exists because Berardo laid the garden across a steep hillside when he began converting the old Quinta do Prazer estate from 1987 onward, and the paths between the lake, the cycad collection and the North Entrance climb hard enough that a shuttle earns its keep. If you are short on time, travelling with someone who finds hills difficult, or want to bank energy for the museum's three floors, it is the single best $5.73 (€5) you can spend on site.

Add the 18-minute average cable car ride each way if you are coming from central Funchal, plus queueing time at both ends. A garden-and-museum day with the trolley bus is comfortably a half day door to door, longer if the cable car queue runs long.

The Cycad Collection

The garden holds more than 500 Encephalartos plants, representing 30 of the 65 known species in the genus, one of the reasons Monte Palace is taken seriously by botanists rather than treated as a pretty backdrop. Encephalartos is among the most threatened plant genera on earth, reduced across parts of its native southern Africa by illegal collecting, so a living collection this size functions as a conservation bank as much as a display. Cycads only look like palms.

As a lineage they predate the dinosaurs, and individual plants in this collection can take decades to produce a single new frond. Walk past a cluster without slowing down and you miss the point of them: this is one of the oldest plant groups on the property, growing at a pace that makes the rest of the garden feel young.

Tile Panels And Garden Design

Portuguese azulejo panels from the 17th to 20th centuries line the walks, including the 'History of Portugal' and 'Adventures of the Portuguese in Japan' panels, brought together as part of Berardo's redesign of the old Quinta do Prazer estate from 1987 onward. Azulejo is a centuries-old Portuguese craft, and pairing it with a tropical garden was Berardo's own choice, not an accident of the site's history. Beyond the tiles, the layout mixes oriental garden sections with a stretch of Laurissilva, Madeira's native laurel forest vegetation found almost nowhere else on the planet, plus waterfalls and koi carp, swans, peacocks and the flamingo pairs introduced in 2023.

The consequence for a visitor: this is several gardens stitched together rather than one themed garden, so wandering without a fixed route is the intended way to see it, not a mistake.

The Museum

The museum runs over three floors inside the old Monte Palace Hotel building, split by subject rather than by era. The ground floor holds minerals and precious stones, around 700 specimens. The upper two floors hold modern and contemporary art, more than 200 pieces from the Berardo Collection, the same private collection behind Lisbon's Museu Coleção Berardo.

Guided museum tours are free but must be pre-booked and are for groups only, so an independent visitor gets no docent and reads the labels alone. Budget real time here rather than treating it as a coda to the garden: three floors of minerals and art take longer to see properly than the ticket's 1.5 to 2.5 hour estimate assumes if the garden has already used up most of that window.

What You Cannot See

The palace interior itself, the building that gives the garden its name, is closed to visitors beyond the museum floors housed inside it. Monte Palace is not a house-museum in the way some Madeira quintas are, so there is no period drawing room or preserved bedroom to see. What you are paying for is the building's exterior silhouette against the garden, the museum collections housed inside it, and the grounds around it.

Visitors picturing a furnished historic interior, based on the 1897 Rhine-inspired design, should adjust that expectation before they buy the ticket.

The Three Entrances

One ticket office sits next to the Funchal cable car exit at Caminho das Babosas A4, the most convenient if you arrive by cable car. The North Entrance is at Caminho das Babosas 4. The third is the Belvedere, or East, entrance.

All three sell the same $20.63 (€18) ticket.

Online Tickets: The Rules That Actually Differ

The operator sells tickets online through its own Online Ticket Office, and the FAQ confirms it plainly. Online tickets cost the same $20.63 (€18) as the desk, with no discount. What you gain is validity: online tickets are valid 365 days from the date of issue and need not be printed.

Tickets bought on site are valid only on the day of purchase. There are no date changes and no refunds on unused tickets in either channel, so an online ticket is a bet that you will visit within a year, not a flexible booking.

Fast Track And Re-Entry

Online-ticket holders get Fast Track entry at the office next to the cable-car exit and at the Belvedere East entrance, a perk the operator built to reward buying ahead rather than queueing at the desk. Tickets bought through an agency get Fast Track only at the cable-car office, so a bundled tour ticket does not carry the same weight at the other two gates. Once a ticket is validated there is no re-entry, a rule that exists because the garden runs three separate ticket offices with no way to track a visitor who slipped out and back through a different one.

Plan food, toilet stops and the museum all inside the one visit, and remember the operator states no visitor cap, so a queue is about desk speed, not capacity.

Which Is Which

Monte Palace Tropical Garden is a private foundation project, the estate businessman José Manuel Rodrigues Berardo began converting into a tropical garden in 1987, sitting at Monte itself on Caminho das Babosas and costing $20.63 (€18) with the museum and wine tasting included. The Madeira Botanical Garden is a public garden owned by the Autonomous Region and managed by IFCN, on the opposite side of the valley, reached from Monte by its own cable car. One is a private collector's estate turned museum garden, the other a government-run botanical collection, and that ownership difference is why their prices, hours and online-sale rules never match.

The Other Cable Car

The Monte-Botanical Garden cable car is run by Teleférico do Jardim Botânico, a company with nothing to do with the Funchal-Monte line that brings visitors up to Monte Palace, and it sells combined tickets with Botanical Garden entry built in, something Monte Palace itself does not offer. If you stood at the Babosas terminal and rode a cable car across the valley instead of walking to Monte Palace's gate, you went to the Botanical Garden, not here, and your ticket will not get you into this garden. The two terminals sit close enough to swap by mistake, which is the single most common wayfinding error at Monte.

Can You Do Both In One Day?

Yes, and many visitors do, since the two cable car terminals at Monte face each other across Largo das Babosas, a few minutes apart on foot. Budget a half day for each garden if you want to see both properly rather than rushing either one. If you only have time for one and want museums, azulejo tile panels and a cycad collection old enough to predate the dinosaurs as a lineage, choose Monte Palace.

If you want a purely botanical, government-run collection with strong viewpoints over Funchal and no museum wing to slow you down, choose the Botanical Garden instead. Trying to rush both into one afternoon is the version that satisfies neither.

By Cable Car

The Funchal cable car leaves from beside the Old Town and takes about 18 minutes to the upper station at Largo das Babosas 8. From there, walk to the ticket office next to the cable car exit at Caminho das Babosas A4, which is the garden's closest entrance. No official source publishes a walking time from the station to the garden, but the office is at the exit, so it is the shortest possible walk.

By Bus Or By Car

Buses 20, 21, 22 and 48 all serve Monte and drop passengers within reach of the North Entrance at Caminho das Babosas 4, the natural door for anyone arriving without a cable car ticket. Drivers should head for the same North Entrance, where free parking sits nearby, since the other two gates, the cable-car office and the Belvedere East entrance, have no equivalent parking of their own. Neither the bus operator nor Monte Palace publishes a fare figure for these routes on the garden's own pages, so check Horários do Funchal directly before you travel.

The practical consequence either way is the same door: bus and car arrivals both funnel through the North Entrance rather than the two cable-car-side gates.

Which Door, In Short

Finding Monte Itself

Monte sits high above Funchal, though the exact figure depends which official source you read: one page prints about 550 m, another about 500 m. Use 550 m as the working number. The parish grew up around the church and the old palace estates on this shoulder of the hillside precisely because it sits above the city's heat and haze, which is also why Monte Palace's founders chose it as a leisure property in the 18th century.

The garden's address is Caminho das Babosas, Monte, 9050 Funchal, and any of the three entrances gets you inside once you have found the right road.
