Getting from the terminal to where you want to be is straightforward. Taxis are metered under the regional convention, with a flag fare of $4.58 (€4.00) by day, meaning 06:00 to 21:00, and $5.50 (€4.80) at night, all day Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Two things to time around. The Mercado dos Lavradores keeps municipal hours, Monday to Friday 07:00-19:00 and Saturday 07:00-14:00, and closes on Sundays and public holidays, so a Sunday call means the market building itself will be shut. The walk back is downhill-adjacent and flat along the water, so even a long day on foot in town should leave you energy for the return to the gangway.

The Funchal-Monte cable car leaves from the lower station in the Old Town area, near Zona Velha, and climbs to Largo das Babosas in Monte. The ride takes 18 minutes, which is the only officially timed connection between any two of Funchal's visitor areas. It runs daily from 08:45 to 17:45, and 17:45 is also the last boarding. At the top you have two classic options. The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is open daily with the last entry at 17:00 and admission of $20.63 (€18), closing only on 25 December. The Monte toboggan is the wicker sledge ride down the hill, run by the carreiros. It operates Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00 and is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Two facts catch visitors out every single week. First, the ride does not end where it starts. It finishes in Livramento, part way down the hill, and there is no operator shuttle back to the start or to the centre, so you continue down on foot or by bus or taxi. Second, the Sunday closure means a Sunday call rules the toboggan out entirely, whatever any earlier guide told you.

So can you fit Monte before your ship sails? Work backwards from your all-aboard time. The sum is simple. Roughly 15 minutes to walk from the pier to the lower station by the commonly reported third-party estimate, 18 minutes up in the cable car, plus queue time on a heavy call day, then your time at the top, then the descent and the walk back. If your ship sails at 17:00 or later and you are at the cable car by mid morning, the day works with a comfortable margin, and the return fare of $25.21 (€22) buys you the simplest descent. If you sail at 13:00 or earlier, treat Monte as tight and consider the Old Town-only plan instead, because queue time at the cable car on a three-ship day is the variable you cannot control. Buses 20, 21, 22 and 48 also climb to Monte if the cable car queue looks long, and bus 22 additionally serves Babosas, but the operator publishes no walking-time connection between the bus stops and the sights.

One more trap to name. If your call day is a Sunday, the toboggan is closed, and the market is closed, but the cable car, the Botanical Garden cable car and Monte Palace all run their normal daily schedule.
