Funchal Airport: Getting from Cristiano Ronaldo Airport to the City Centre

A runway that grew three times

The airport opened on 8 July 1964 with a single runway of 1,600 m. After the 1977 TAP Flight 425 crash it was extended to 1,800 m, inaugurated on 1 February 1986. The final extension reached 2,781 m, finished on 15 September 2000, the airport's present runway length.

Landfill was not realistic on this coast, so the extension was built as a platform partly over the ocean, supported by about 180 columns roughly 70 m tall. The building contractor was Andrade Gutierrez. The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering gave the airport its Outstanding Structure Award in 2004 for that extension.

Aviation writers have nicknamed the airport 'the Kai Tak of Europe' because of the tight turn aircraft must make onto the final approach, a reference to Hong Kong's former airport. That approach is the answer to why Madeira Airport is considered challenging, and it is why pilots need a special briefing for the airport in poor weather.

Practical facts

The airport's full postal address is Santa Cruz, 9100-105, and the main phone line is +351 291 520 700. On the distance question, two official-adjacent figures exist and they do not agree. Visit Funchal, the municipal tourism body, puts the airport 19.1 km from the city and about 17 minutes by car.

A separate estimate tied to the airport operator side says roughly 21 km and 18 minutes. The two sources disagree by about 2 km. We use 19.1 km and 17 minutes as the municipal figure throughout this page, because Visit Funchal is the city's own institution.

Can you fly direct from the United States?

No. This research found no direct scheduled flights from the United States to Madeira. The confirmed long-range style connections are within Europe, including TAP's links from Lisbon and Porto and newer routes such as an airBaltic service from Tallinn reported in October 2025. A traveller from the US connects through Lisbon or another mainland European hub.

That usually means clearing passport control at the connecting airport, so leave yourself a generous connection window.

The table below collects the airport's key numbers in one place. Each figure comes from the airport history record, from Visit Funchal, or from the airport operator's own pages, as cited in our research files.

The route runs from Aeroporto, stop 01, to Praia Formosa, stop 26, with the full ride taking 50 minutes. Key stops along the way: Boa Nova at 15 minutes, the Mercado at 22 minutes, Avenida do Mar at 24 minutes, Estrada Monumental and the Lido at 35-38 minutes, and Fórum Madeira at 42 minutes. That means most visitors staying in the old town or the hotel zone step off well before the last stop.

Fares

Buy on board or prepay. An adult on-board ticket is $7.68 (€6.70) and a child ticket is $3.78 (€3.30). Prepaid on a GIRO card the adult fare drops to $6.36 (€5.55) and the child fare to $3.15 (€2.75).

Children counted are 6 to 12 inclusive. The GIRO card itself costs $0.57 (€0.50), so the prepaid option only pays off if you will use the card again on city buses. Buying prepaid saves $1.32 (€1.15) on a single adult fare, our sum, which is worth it if the same card also covers a Monte bus or a ride back to the airport at the end of the trip.

Timetable from the airport

On weekdays buses leave half-hourly from 08:30 to 12:00, then hourly from 13:00 to 22:00. On Saturdays it is half-hourly from 08:30 to 12:00, then hourly from 14:00 to 22:00. On Sundays and holidays departures are 08:30, 09:00, 09:30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:00, then hourly from 14:00 to 22:00.

There is no service on 25 December. The operator's phone number is 291 201 151. Fares come from the official SIGA page, in force since 1 April 2026.

If the Aerobus timetable does not fit

Ordinary city buses also serve the region, and the regional tourist pass covers all operators including the Aerobus. It costs $15.76 (€13.75) for 1 day and $41.26 (€36.00) for 7 days. If you plan a full day of bus riding after you arrive, the pass can be cheaper than buying the Aerobus and city tickets separately.

Note that on-board city bus tickets are cash only, per SIGA's own FAQ, and bicycles are not permitted aboard Horários do Funchal buses. For how the network works once you are in town, see getting around Funchal.

Taxis run on the meter under the regional IMT tariff. The flag fare is $4.58 (€4.00) by day, meaning 06:00 to 21:00, and $5.50 (€4.80) at night and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. After the flag drop the meter adds $0.11 (€0.10) for every 65 m or 30 seconds by day, and for every 52 m or 25 seconds at night.

Waiting time is billed at $13.75 (€12.00) per hour by day and $16.51 (€14.40) per hour at night. There is a luggage and pet supplement of $1.72 (€1.50). None of the official tariff documents a flat airport-to-Funchal rate, so any driver quoting one fixed price at the rank is not quoting the tariff.

What a ride should roughly cost

No official total fare for the full run is published, and we will not invent one. What you can do is check that the meter shows the right flag fare for the time of day before the car moves, and expect the luggage supplement to be added if you travel with suitcases. If a driver offers a flat rate that you prefer, that is a private arrangement between you and the driver, not the tariff.

No Uber, no ride-hailing

Bolt's own Madeira page offers airport rides, with its taxi options priced by the meter. No official source confirms Uber operating in Funchal. Taxis are the only confirmed on-demand road option besides the Aerobus and the buses.

If your phone shows a ride-hailing app as available, treat that as unverified. The confirmed alternatives are the taxi rank outside the terminal or a pre-booked transfer.

The tariff figures below are the complete published rate set for the airport run. They come from the IMT Madeira taxi tariff and Visit Funchal's airport page.

The airport publishes a Baggage Services page for left luggage. It sits before security on the ground floor and is open 00:00 to 24:00, every day. The price is $5.16 (€4.50) per item for each 24-hour period or 4-hour fraction of one, VAT included.

Losing the receipt costs $29.81 (€26.00), so photograph or stash it carefully. The desk accepts bicycles, surfboards and several bags per passenger, which matters for surfers and cyclists whose checked items are awkward sizes.

Safe Bag wrapping

The same operation runs a Safe Bag wrapping service before security on floor 1, open 08:00 to 14:00. If a strap or zip has failed, wrapping the case before checking it in can save a repack. A note on sources: a separate Left Luggage page on the airport site did not render during our research pass, so the figures here are the ones from the Baggage Services page, which did render and verify.

Our research files did not include airport terminal opening hours for shops and cafés, so we do not print any.
