Mercado dos Lavradores

The Mercado dos Lavradores opened on 24 November 1940, designed by architect Edmundo Tavares in Rationalist Modernism, with Art Deco tile panels by João Rodrigues decorating the walls. It stands at Largo dos Lavradores, right at the edge of the Zona Velha old town, in a quarter that was already a fishing and trading district before the market gave it a purpose-built home. The building itself is worth pausing for: a central atrium with a calçada mosaic floor, galleries carrying the fruit stalls above, and the ground floor split between flowers, produce and fish.

Its own name, Lavradores, means farmers or farm workers, and the building has kept that working character rather than turning into a purely tourist market, even as visitors now make up a large share of who walks through it.

Fruit and Flowers

The upper galleries and the ground-floor stalls carry Madeira's fruit, much of which does not travel to mainland Europe in the same volume, alongside cut flowers arranged in the tight, colourful bunches the market is known for in photographs. Stallholders set their own prices, which the market itself does not publish or regulate beyond the building's opening hours. Bring cash for small purchases and expect to negotiate nothing, since the tight bunches and pre-weighed fruit are usually sold at a fixed, marked price rather than by the kind of haggling some visitors expect from an open-air market.

The Fish Hall

A separate hall holds the fish market, where the catch includes espada, black scabbardfish, one of the dishes covered on typical food in Funchal. The fish hall runs on the same hours as the rest of the market and is free to walk through even if you are not buying. Go early rather than late in the posted hours if the fish itself is the reason for your visit, since a working fish market sells down its freshest catch first and the display thins out well before closing.

The Tile Panels

João Rodrigues' Art Deco tile panels, part of the original 1940 design, decorate several walls of the building and depict the market trades in stylised form. They are a fixed part of the architecture rather than a rotating exhibit, so they are there on any visit during opening hours, no separate ticket or timing needed. Since they are dated in the tilework itself to 1940, they double as a quick way to confirm you are looking at original decoration rather than a later addition, unlike the loose azulejo souvenirs sold on the streets nearby.

Both the municipal markets portal, mercados.cm-funchal.pt, and Visit Madeira agree the market opens from 07:00 on weekdays, runs Saturday 07:00-14:00, and closes on Sunday and public holidays. Where they differ is the Friday closing time: the municipal site says 19:00, the same as Monday through Thursday, while Visit Madeira gives Friday a later close of 20:00. Neither page explains the gap, and no third official source settles it.

This page states both rather than pick one, and the practical advice is the same either way: do not plan a Friday evening visit around a specific closing minute past 19:00, since one of the two authorities that should know says the doors are already shut by then.

Annual Events

The market runs an annual Noite do Mercado, Market Night, on 23 December, and a Summer Market ran from 20 to 25 July 2026. Neither event changes the standard weekly hours above outside its own dates.

The market works best early, whether that means a weekday morning before the day's other plans or the Saturday 07:00-14:00 window, the one slot of the week when this is the busiest single stop in the old town. Pair it with the painted doors of Rua de Santa Maria, a few minutes' walk away, or with the São Tiago fort further toward the sea. If your day includes the Monte cable car, the lower station sits inside the same quarter, so a market visit slots naturally before the ride up the slope.
