Camara de Lobos From Funchal: Buses, Fares And Whether It Is Worth It

Camara de Lobos from Funchal is the fishing town just west of the city, about 9 km away by the municipality's own description. Starting from our Funchal city guide, it makes an easy half day out, and the bus ride takes about 20 minutes. This page covers the buses from Funchal, what the ride costs, how long it takes and what you actually get when you arrive. For the cliff and skywalk further along the same road, see our separate page on Cabo Girao from Funchal. For other outings, our day trips hub covers the whole island, and the homepage ties every trip together.

Getting There By Bus

Two operators get you there from Funchal and neither needs a booking. The Rodoeste inter-urban buses are the faster and more frequent option. The Horarios do Funchal urban network also reaches the edge of town.

The Rodoeste Route

Rodoeste's Cabo Girao route leaves from Funchal Avenida do Mar and calls at Camara de Lobos 20 minutes after departure, working west through the Lido area after 5 minutes and Forum Madeira after 10. The bus then continues to Estreito de Camara de Lobos and on to Cabo Girao, so the same ticket serves both the town and the cliff if you want to combine them. Weekday departures are spread across the morning and early afternoon.

Saturday and Sunday or holiday services run less often, so check the timetable on the Rodoeste site before a weekend trip.

The Horarios Do Funchal Urban Option

Horarios do Funchal, Funchal's own city bus network, also reaches Camara de Lobos. Line 3 stops at Depois Ribeira Pizo and line 01 stops at Ponta da Laranjeira. From the Ponta da Laranjeira stop it is about 1 km, roughly 10 minutes on foot, into the village centre.

This is the slower option but it uses the same flat on-board fare as a city bus, and you can see the timetables at Horarios do Funchal.

What It Costs

Here is the honest answer. No specific fare is published for the Funchal to Camara de Lobos hop by either operator. Rodoeste prices single tickets by zone count on its general fare page and does not state which zone Camara de Lobos falls into.

Its zone fares run from $1.49 (€1.30) for 1 zone through $2.52 (€2.20) for 2 zones, $3.15 (€2.75) for 3 zones and $3.84 (€3.35) for 4 zones, up to $6.88 (€6.00) for 8 zones. Horarios do Funchal charges a municipal on-board fare of $2.35 (€2.05) on its urban routes, but Camara de Lobos is its own municipality, so it is not certain from our sources whether the municipal or the intermunicipal band applies to their lines that cross the boundary. Carry a little cash, pay on board, and treat $2.35 (€2.05) as the likely minimum either way.

You can check current fares at Rodoeste.

Why People Come Here

A short bit of background before you go, because it helps the place make sense.

A Working Fishing Town With A Famous Visitor

The town takes its name from the sea lions, the lobos-marinhos, that once hauled out in the cove. João Gonçalves Zarco settled here first between 1420 and 1424 and the parish dates from 1430, which makes it one of the oldest settled places on the island. The flat-bottomed boats in the bay are called Xavelhas and they are still part of the view.

Winston Churchill painted the bay during a visit to the island, which is why you will hear his name mentioned near the waterfront. The municipality covers 51.82 km² and roughly 35,000 to 40,000 people across five parishes, including Curral das Freiras. Ten minutes further along the same bus route sits the highest sea cliff in Europe as described by Visit Madeira, and our Cabo Girao page covers that stop separately.

Taxi, Car Or On Foot From Funchal

If buses do not suit, here is what we can and cannot tell you.

What Is And Is Not Published

No taxi fare for this route is published, and no official drive time or driving distance is published either. The only distance figure we can cite is 9 km from Funchal, which comes from the municipality's own description of its location at cm-camaradelobos.pt. Treat that as the town's own stated separation, not a verified drive time, since no drive time appears in our sources.

In practice the road follows the coast through the hotel zone west of Funchal, and a taxi driver will quote you directly. Walking the whole way is possible along the coast road but we do not state a walking time, as none is published and the route is not a marked walking trail.

Do And Don't

Do

  • Check the return timetable at the stop before you settle in, weekend Rodoeste services run less often
  • Carry small cash for the on-board fare, since no single published price covers this exact hop
  • Combine the town with Cabo Girao on the same Rodoeste bus, it calls at both
  • Look for the Xavelhas fishing boats in the bay, they are the reason people photograph this harbour
  • Give yourself two to three hours, the town is small but the waterfront pace is slow

Don't

  • Don't confuse this page's subject with Cabo Girao, the skywalk cliff is a separate stop further along the line
  • Don't expect a printed fare list at the stop, the zone price is settled by the driver
  • Don't plan a taxi around a fixed price, no taxi fare for this route is published
  • Don't leave the bus at the first stop without checking where your line actually halts, the urban lines stop short of the bay

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Camara de Lobos worth visiting?

For a Funchal base, yes, because it costs almost nothing and takes about 20 minutes each way by bus. It is a working fishing town with a real harbour, the Xavelhas boats and a bay Churchill painted, rather than a built attraction. If you want a big-ticket sight, pair it with Cabo Girao on the same bus route.

Bus Funchal to Camara de Lobos timetable

The Rodoeste Cabo Girao route calls at Camara de Lobos 20 minutes after leaving Funchal Avenida do Mar. Weekday departures from Funchal are lines 142 at 08:05, 8 at 10:05, 7 at 11:00, 4 at 12:05, 6 at 13:30, 7 at 15:30 and 107/115 at 16:05. Saturday and Sunday or holiday services run less often, so confirm on the Rodoeste site before travelling at a weekend.

What number bus from Funchal to Camara de Lobos?

Two answers. On the Rodoeste inter-urban network you can take lines 142, 8, 7, 4, 6 or 107/115 from Avenida do Mar, all of which call in the town. On the Horarios do Funchal city network, line 3 stops at Depois Ribeira Pizo and line 01 stops at Ponta da Laranjeira, about 1 km or 10 minutes on foot from the centre.

How far is Camara de Lobos from Funchal?

The municipality's own description puts the town about 9 km from Funchal. No official driving distance or drive time is published for the route, so we cannot give you a number for either, but the bus covers the trip in about 20 minutes.

Is cash or card better for the bus fare?

Cash is the safe choice. Both operators collect the fare on board, neither publishes a fare for this exact hop, and there is no online ticket for the Rodoeste ride. Carry coins and small notes so you can pay the driver quickly and take your seat for the 20-minute run.

See It Without The Timetables

If you would rather have the town, the cliff and the mountain viewpoints handled in one morning, [the Cabo Girao and Camara de Lobos jeep tour](#tour-31) runs 4 hours by open-air 4x4 with pickup from Funchal for $57.43. Or keep it independent and simply catch the next bus.

Prices and times are set by the operator and confirmed at checkout.
