Old Town to City Centre
These two areas sit next to each other and most visitors walk between them without noticing a clear boundary. The market and the painted-door streets of Zona Velha give way to Avenida Arriaga and the marina within a few minutes on foot, so treat this pair as one combined visit rather than two separate trips. Because neither area charges to enter or requires a booking, there is no reason to plan the order in advance: start wherever your hotel or the day's first sight puts you.

City Centre to the Lido
The seafront promenade connects the centre to the Lido hotel zone on foot, a walk that passes Santa Catarina Park partway along. It suits visitors staying at a Lido hotel who want to reach the old town without a taxi, and it is one of the more scenic walks in the city, running along the water the whole way. No official walking-time figure is published for the full stretch, so budget generously on a first attempt rather than trust a single quoted number, and use the park roughly halfway as a natural rest point.
The Lido to São Martinho
Continuing further west along the same promenade brings you from the Lido to São Martinho and Praia Formosa, the free beach. This is a longer stretch than the centre-to-Lido walk, so budget more time or take a bus if you are doing the whole coastal run in one day. Since Praia Formosa costs nothing to enter, unlike the paid Lido bathing complex partway back, this end of the walk is the one to save for when your budget for the day is spent.
Reaching Monte
Monte is the one area that breaks the coastal pattern entirely. It sits about 550 m above the city and is reached by cable car from the old town, or by buses 20, 21, 22 or 48. There is no realistic walking route for most visitors, and the altitude change means the climate at Monte often differs noticeably from the coast below.
Because of that, pack a layer even on a hot coastal day if Monte is on the plan, and treat the cable car fare as a cost the other four areas never require.
