Funchal To Cabo Girao: Bus, Tours And The Skywalk

Cabo Girao from Funchal is a short trip with one big view: a sea cliff that rises 580 metres above the Atlantic, its glass-floored skywalk one of the most booked excursions on the island. Coming from our Funchal city guide, this page covers the practical part: how to get from Funchal to Cabo Girao by public bus, what the skywalk costs, when it opens, and how the tour options compare. The nearby fishing town is covered on its own page, Camara de Lobos from Funchal, and other ideas for days out are on our day trips hub, back on the Funchal homepage.

Quick answer The short version

The skywalk at Cabo Girao costs $5.73 (€5.00) per adult and is open daily 08:00 to 20:00. A direct Rodoeste bus runs from Funchal Avenida do Mar to the Cabo Girao stop in 45 minutes on the fastest run, or you can book the Cabo Girao jeep tour for a half day out.

Key takeaways

  • Skywalk entry is separate from any transport cost and free for children up to 12 and Madeira residents
  • Tours bundle transport and guiding but most do not include the skywalk ticket

There is only one paid element at the site itself, the SIMplifica service 256 skywalk entry, and it is bought on site rather than ahead of time. Everything else you might pay for is a tour, and the two below differ mainly in how much of the day they take and what else they add around Cabo Girao. Full details of each are in the tour list below the table.

Two tours from Funchal put Cabo Girao on the itinerary. They suit different kinds of day, and the key difference is that only one of them covers the skywalk entry fee for you.

Getting There By Bus

The cheapest way from Funchal to Cabo Girao is the public Rodoeste bus. It is a direct service from the Avenida do Mar in central Funchal to a stop called Cabo Girao (Miradouro), so you step off within a short walk of the cliff top. The timetable below is the operator's own 'Cabo Girao (Miradouro)' sheet.

Going Out

Buses leave Funchal Avenida do Mar and pass the Lido after 5 minutes, Forum Madeira after a further 5, Camara de Lobos at the 20-minute mark, then Estreito de Camara de Lobos and on to Cabo Girao. The fastest run, line 142 at 08:05 on weekdays, reaches Cabo Girao at 08:50 after 45 minutes. Later runs take a little longer, up to 50 minutes on the 15:30 departure.

The same buses continue to Ribeira Brava, which they reach 30 minutes after Cabo Girao, so if you miss the cliff stop you have not lost the day.

Coming Back

Return buses towards Funchal pass the Cabo Girao stop on their way from Ribeira Brava. On weekdays the times through Cabo Girao include 07:55, 10:40, 11:30, 13:00, 13:55, 14:55, 15:55 and 17:00. There are fewer runs on Saturday and on Sunday and holidays, and the operator's sheet does not list the weekend return times in the same detail, so check the timetable at the stop or on the Rodoeste site before you commit to a specific return bus.

Missing the last one means a taxi or a long wait, and no fixed taxi fare for this route is published.

What The Bus Costs

Here is the awkward part, and it is worth knowing before you queue. Rodoeste's route sheet for this line prints no fare at all, and the operator's general fare page prices single tickets by zone count without saying which zone Cabo Girao falls into. So no exact euro figure for this specific ride can honestly be quoted anywhere.

Fares are paid on board in cash. What can be printed is the zone table, which gives you the honest upper and lower bounds of what you might be asked to pay on a Funchal route.

ZonesSingle Fare
1$1.49 (€1.30)
2$2.52 (€2.20)
3$3.15 (€2.75)
4$3.84 (€3.35)
5$4.58 (€4.00)
6$5.39 (€4.70)
7$6.13 (€5.35)
8$6.88 (€6.00)

One practical extra: the same buses stop in Camara de Lobos 20 minutes after leaving Funchal, which makes a two-stop day easy. Ride out, hop off in the town for lunch, catch a later bus on the same line up to the cliff, then ride back to Funchal from the 17:00 or an earlier return. How that town fits into the day is covered on our Camara de Lobos page.

Driving Or Taxi From Funchal

Cabo Girao is close to Funchal and the road is straightforward, which is why tours and buses cover it so easily. But if you were hoping for a firm figure on the drive or the fare, neither exists in any source we could verify.

Taxi

No fixed or metered taxi fare for the Funchal to Cabo Girao route is published anywhere in the official sources. Unlike the Funchal airport transfer, which does have a published metered flag rate on its own page, this route has no listed price. Agree a fare with the driver before setting off, or use the meter, and treat any figure a driver quotes as negotiable.

Return trips have the same gap, so budget for two negotiated fares or consider the bus.

Driving Yourself

No official drive time or distance for this route is published in the sources used here, so we will not invent one. What is on record is the shape of the road: the bus route runs west out of Funchal along the coast through the Lido and Forum Madeira area, then through Camara de Lobos and Estreito de Camara de Lobos before climbing to the Cabo Girao stop. If you hire a car, the GPS coordinates for the site are 32.656400, -17.004203, which will take you straight there on any mapping app.

Parking at the cliff top is not described in the sources, so allow a little buffer time in high season.

The Skywalk Itself: Fee, Hours, Altitude

The essentials, nothing more.

The Cabo Girao skywalk is a glass-floored viewing platform at the cliff edge, 580 metres above the sea on what Visit Madeira describes as the highest promontory in Europe. Entry is run as SIMplifica service 256 and costs $5.73 (€5.00) per adult, paid on site. Children up to 12 inclusive, residents of the Madeira autonomous region and visitors with reduced mobility or wheelchair users enter free.

It is open every day from 08:00 to 20:00, no booking required, and the site sits on Estrada do Cabo Girao in Camara de Lobos municipality. The fee was set under Portaria 591/2025 of 27 October, which amended the earlier Portaria 946/2022, so it is an official regional charge rather than a private operator's price.

Which Way Suits Your Day

Three honest ways to do this trip, matched to how much time and money you want to spend.

The Bus, For The Cheapest Trip

Take the Rodoeste bus out and back and pay the skywalk on site. Your total transport cost lands somewhere between $1.49 (€1.30) and $6.88 (€6.00) each way depending on the zone the driver charges, plus $5.73 (€5.00) entry. The trade-off is timetable discipline: seven outward runs on a weekday, fewer at weekends, and the return buses thin out after 17:00.

It suits anyone comfortable planning a morning around fixed departure times.

The Half-Day Jeep, For Cabo Girao Plus Mountains

The Cabo Girao jeep tour costs $57.43, runs 4 hours, and is rated 4.4 from 82 reviews. Green Devil Safari operates it in open-air 4x4 vehicles with Funchal pickup included, adding stops in Camara de Lobos and the mountain viewpoints of Jardim da Serra. Note carefully that skywalk entry is NOT included, so carry the $5.73 (€5.00) separately.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. It is not suitable for people with back problems or wheelchair users per the listing.

The Full Island Day, For The Whole West In One Go

The full-island 4WD tour costs $79.25, runs 8 hours, and carries a 4.9 rating from 9,810 reviews, which makes it one of the strongest-reviewed day trips from Funchal. Cabo Girao Skywalk is one stop among many on a route that also reaches Porto Moniz, Seixal, Fanal forest and Ponta do Sol. According to the listing no attraction tickets are bundled and all stops are free to enter, so the skywalk fee is not covered here either.

Free pickup and drop-off in the central Funchal area and near the port.

Cabo Girao From Funchal: Do And Don't

Do

  • Carry cash for the bus, fares are paid on board and no exact published figure exists for this route
  • Check the return timetable at the stop before walking away from it, weekend services are reduced
  • Bring the $5.73 (€5.00) skywalk fee in a form you can pay on site, since tours generally do not bundle it
  • Go early on the 08:05 bus if you want the platform quieter and cooler light over the water
  • Pair the trip with Camara de Lobos using the same bus line, the stop is 20 minutes from Funchal
  • Wear shoes with some grip, the platform and the paths around the viewpoint are the only flat surfaces

Don't

  • Do not assume a taxi fare, none is published for this route so agree the price first
  • Do not turn up expecting the last bus to be late in the evening, returns thin out after 17:00 on weekdays
  • Do not book the jeep tour if mobility is limited, the listing states it is not suitable for wheelchair users or bad backs
  • Do not budget assuming the skywalk is included in a tour price, check the entry terms before paying
  • Do not drive without checking parking conditions, no parking information for the site appears in the sources

Cabo Girao From Funchal: Questions

Is Cabo Girao worth it?

It is one of the easiest big sights to reach from Funchal: a direct bus, a small entry fee and a 580-metre cliff with a glass floor. Whether it justifies a whole day is another matter, which is why most visitors pair it with Camara de Lobos or fold it into a longer tour.

Is Cabo Girao Skywalk free?

No. Adult entry is $5.73 (€5.00) under the official SIMplifica service 256. Children up to 12 inclusive, residents of the Madeira autonomous region and visitors with reduced mobility or wheelchair users are exempt and enter free.

How do I get from Funchal to Cabo Girao by bus?

Take the direct Rodoeste service from Funchal Avenida do Mar. On weekdays seven runs head out between 08:05 and 16:05, with the fastest, line 142, arriving in 45 minutes. Saturday and Sunday have fewer departures. Pay on board.

What is the Funchal to Cabo Girao bus timetable for the return?

Weekday buses pass Cabo Girao towards Funchal at 07:55, 10:40, 11:30, 13:00, 13:55, 14:55, 15:55 and 17:00. Fewer runs operate on Saturday and on Sunday and holidays, and those weekend return times are not listed in the same detail, so verify at the stop.

How much is the bus fare to Cabo Girao?

The exact fare is not published. Rodoeste's route sheet prints no price and its fare page does not state which zone applies to this stop. Funchal route singles range from $1.49 (€1.30) for one zone to $6.88 (€6.00) for eight, paid on board.

Where is the Stairway to Heaven in Madeira?

Some travelers use the phrase Stairway to Heaven when searching for the Cabo Girao skywalk, and they generally mean this same glass platform on the cliff west of Funchal. It is not an official name in any source we checked, so treat it as a nickname rather than a separate site.

What are the Cabo Girao skywalk opening hours?

Daily from 08:00 to 20:00, with no closed days stated on the official service page. No booking is required, you pay the entry fee on site.
